Weathering the Ice Storm

Did you know Jesus talked Texan? “Ya’ll” – one of our state colloquialisms – is used often by him. And hearing him use this word is a balm for my soul and an assurance for my spirit – and not just because I’ve lived in Texas for most of my life. Because “ya’ll” alleviates the anxiety that I have often experienced by feeling not enough in my discipleship. When I think of all the ways I should be doing more, helping more, praying more, sharing more; discipleship can feel like a guilt trip. But when Jesus says “ya’ll” – those feelings start to melt away, because I realize discipleship is not just an individual responsibility, it is a corporate one. We are not expected to do ALL the things individually – but to be the “ya’ll”- the whole body of Christ - to ensure Jesus is alive in this world.
“Ya’ll” is such an important concept that Jesus uses it in his first sermon as he says – “ya’ll are the salt of the earth,” and “ya’ll are the light of the world.” It’s a way of telling us who we already are as disciples. It’s an indicative statement – of our current identity, not who we are going to be. So we learn that we are not individually salt - adding our individual flavor to the world, or solely preserving the gospel. Ya’ll assures us that salt’s best flavor occurs when it is mixed with other spices, as we come together for the purpose of seasoning the world with God’s love. So, on the days I can’t pack Lovepac boxes in the Fellowship Hall because I’m preaching, I know there are other people who are. On the days when my sermons don’t impact you, I can trust that someone in this church will reach you with a meaningful word that day. When my talents are not suited for a task before me, I know God has provided someone in the church with those gifts. This is part of what it means to trust the body of Christ: all of us working together to be the salt of the earth.
This past Sunday, our leadership gathered to plan for 2026. We prepared ourselves by preserve a culture of intentionally inviting so all feel included. We developed goals to go out into the world to understand the deep needs of our community so we might season the world with God’s love. Every one of the 131elected leaders has their part they are called to do. But they don’t do it alone - it is not just their individual responsibility – or even their collective team - it is every single member of this church coming together to be who God has made us to be.
For ya’ll are the salt of the earth.
