What's Your Why?

What's Your Why?

by Rev. Alexandra Robinson on December 11, 2024

Reading: Luke 1:46-55

Why are you taking the journey to Bethlehem this year?

What are you hoping to find by the time Christmas Day is here and Christ is born?

Last night, as I was writing my reflection for our Blue Christmas service, I realized that every year, my “why” changes. It is because each year, my relationship with God is in a different place. Each year as the Christ child is born, I am meeting him as a changed person. One year, I may be meeting Jesus longing for hope in a season of devastating loss, while the next I am seeking Jesus’ peace in a year of becoming a mother. One year, I am yearning for Jesus’ stable love when my friendships are stretched from a church appointment transition, and another year I am looking for Jesus’ true joy when a temporary achievement is fleeting. Each year that goes by, I can look back and find my relationship with Jesus, shifting, changing, evolving, and hopefully growing.

This week, as we hear Mary’s Magnificat: a song expressing her “why” – the joy she experiences in a God who sees her, the hope she now has from the One at work for her future. She sings of God’s mercy touching all generations and lifting her up from a lowly state. Her why is because of a God who has seen the state of her life, and reached out with new life.

Only when we know our “why,” can we invite others to experience theirs. For it takes vulnerability and courage to acknowledge you need a “why.” It takes introspection and authenticity. It takes relating sincerely to others.

As in previous years, we are passing out Christmas goodie bags to invite our friends and neighbors to attend Christmas worship services. Whether inviting someone to our special Christmas Music Sunday at 9 or 11 am this week, or our Christmas Eve worship services, I hope you reflect upon your “why.” I pray God has given you so many reasons to meet the Christ child year after year, that you want to share it with others. Perhaps you might share your “why,” in the hopes this Christmas, someone else can find theirs.
