Weathering the Ice Storm

Weathering the Ice Storm

by Rev. Alexandra Robinson on January 28, 2026

Matthew 22:34-40

Watching the ice melt, reminds us of the evanescence of nature. The ice which halted our lives has been changed by the sun. The rising temperatures have slowly transformed the solid into liquid, and the landscape starts to look familiar again.

Watching the ICE protests and raids on our television these past weeks, reminds us of the transition of history. Witnessing the deaths of two citizens halted our hearts and changed our national trust. The rising fears are heating our country, and the divided political landscape looks all too familiar.

We weathered this local freeze through prevention, precaution and purpose, and these can be a guide through the climate of history as well. God gives humans the ability to learn from past mistakes to prevent new ones. God invites us to take precautions so that others may live to the fullest, rather than be harmed by rash decisions. God gives us the power to make choices purposeful toward safety of ourselves and others. Will we learn from this frigid national climate so that the Son of God can warm our hearts again?

This week, we begin a series in worship entitled “Love Thy Neighbor.” Designed to help us live out the greatest commandment, I pray it is also a balm for your soul and a warmth for your spirit. Connecting us with Jesus’ greatest commandment to ‘love thy neighbor as thyself’– we get back to the basics of faith. We are called to not only love our neighbor close to us, but we are called to love those who are different from us. This is the commandment given to love in a way that makes a sacrifice, because of our universal compassion and care for the needs of others.

This is the very nature of God’s relationship with us, that never changes - no matter what storms we weather.
