Ups and Downs

Ups and Downs

by Rev. Alexandra Robinson on November 12, 2025

Reading: Genesis 39-41

The story of Joseph is filled with ups and downs, literally. The pattern that we heard last week of Joseph dreaming of himself elevated above his brothers, results in him being thrown down into a pit and left to starve. But then he is raised up out of the pit, and sold to Potipher. At which time, he is elevated in status, until Potiphar’s wife tries to take him for herself, and he is thrown down into prison. But then his ability to interpret dreams lands him in Pharoah’s court, which in turn elevates him to having high status with power over the whole land of Egypt, so that as he is announced people bow on one knee before him. In the season of celebration, God shares in our joy and laughs in delight alongside of us. I believe this is what is meant by God’s providence. Not that God predicts the future or orchestrates the precise details of our lives, but rather that God’s plan is to be with us always. God’s future is not outlined for us in a way where free will is eliminated, but that in the choices we make, God is always available for grace. God’s activity is not to be predictive in our journey, but to accompany us in the deaths and resurrections. In all the ups and downs…
