Try Something New

Try Something New

by Rev. Alexandra Robinson on August 20, 2025

Reading: Genesis 6:1-22

Last week after church, a member came up to me and shook my hand. She said – “I’ve been waiting to do this a long time, but I never have. I always wanted to come shake your hand. But today you said to try something new – and so I did.” I was so moved by her courage and honesty that I asked if I could give her a big hug. Because as a fellow introvert, I know the bravery it takes to go out of your comfort zone, particularly when it comes to personal interactions. Making yourself vulnerable to connect with people intentionally can be anxiety producing when you are shy. But that is the beauty about trying something new. It can lead us to new relationships – with each other and with God.

That is the whole point of our “Try Something New” fall program – whether it is trying out introducing yourself to someone new or trying out a new program in the church. Trying something new is about trusting God’s guidance. It is about opening up yourself to the work of the Holy Spirit. It is about breaking patterns that bring the same results to starting new patterns that bring different results. And when those patterns are broken, God’s presence is revealed in a new way. Another word for that is transformation.

One of the unexpected outcomes of this new style of preaching, is how it has opened up the Bible to me in a new way: by seeing patterns. This week we will talk about the patterns of the Bible which when revealed, help us to understand Biblical stories that are hard to grasp otherwise. Our Scripture this week: Noah and the flood, is seen as a huge arc of patterns of water stories that lead to new life – from the Red Sea to the Jordan River.

So perhaps as you try something new, a new pattern in knowing God will emerge, transforming your life as well.
