Today and Together

The church was born of the Holy Spirit. This recollection in the book of Acts, presents the Holy Spirit as palpable and powerful. Imagine feeling the wind, blowing so forcefully throughout the whole house that it whisks away limitations of God’s work. Imagine seeing the tongues of fire resting upon each person, claiming them individually as ones empowered by the Spirit. Imagine hearing the noise of so many languages, uniting them within their native tongue and beyond. As you use all of your senses, you can experience the awe, surprise and connection of the Holy. And in that Spirit, there is peace. The Holy Spirit’s peace comes from the assurance that what united the people of God in the beginnings of the church at Pentecost continues today.
Everyday I continued to be awed and surprised feeling the church’s connection. Particularly today, the church’s connection is bringing me peace. I am blessed by so many who have reached out to share your prayers and care during this period of my father’s declining health. Yesterday, he entered a 30 day hospice program, and I am so grateful to be able to be by his side as he transitions from earth to heaven. Since I have walked with many of you through this season as well, I know you understand, and will pray for us because you too have experienced the power of prayer during this time. How thankful I am for a church community that is reaching out to offer help, as I am delegating my responsibilities for the next couple of weeks so I may stay in Tulsa with my father and be by his side. Please be in prayer for our staff and lay leaders, as they are stepping up to go the extra mile in my absence. It is hard not to feel guilty for delegating my responsibilities yet again after my sickness so recently in April, but I know this is the ministry I am called to for such a time as this. It is all a reminder that the church, in the awesome power given by the Holy Spirit is beyond any one person or pastor.
Together, we continue the Pentecost story: as we all unite in the Holy Spirit, to support and uphold each other whenever the time of need. Together, we continue the Pentecost story: letting the spirit work through us individually and collectively for the next steps of who God needs us to be. Together we continue the Pentecost story: may you feel, see and hear it everyday as part of God’s purpose in the church.
Peace and grace to you all,
Alex
