The youth who set an example…

The youth who set an example…

Today we found out that our church won “The Best of Denton County Youth Group!”
Wow!  What an honor to be offered this award and what a great testament to our incredible youth, counselors and leadership!
I personally have had my three children benefit from the belonging found in our youth program.  From confirmation to graduation, they have not only learned about the Bible and how it applies to their lives, they have experienced connection and community.  When my daughter has been in a play at her school or performing in a dance recital, her youth counselors show up to cheer her on.  My son had the opportunity to be in leadership as a confirmation partner.  Another son was able to share his gifts by singing in the youth choir.  What a blessing to have a program that supports, affirms and encourages our youth!  And it all happens because so many people are committed to fulfilling the baptismal vow we make to raise our children in the faith.
For instance, our youth counselors come each Sunday to listen to our students, learn about their lives and be a safe and supportive place to process their challenges.  Whether playing silly games, sharing in Bible study, or listening to their joys and concerns, our youth know this is a safe place for them to share their authentic selves because of their steadfast presence. One of our counselors, Stephanie Canales, has been showing up Sunday mornings to teach Sunday school and on Sunday night as a youth counselor for 17 years!  What an incredible commitment she and our other 6 volunteer counselors: Neil VanCleve, Steve Davis, Andrea Wood, Ryan McCarrick and Brian Strohl and Shannon Strohl give for our students.
I watch as our youth are living out their faith beyond the walls of the church – year after year they go on mission trip to places like Slidell Louisiana, Memphis, Tennessee and North Carolina.  They are being the hands and feet of Christ, even when it means sweating for Jesus as they repair homes in the summer heat!  We’ve experienced their leadership as scouts like Caleb Brooks refurbished our gazebo, Tyler Brooks built a gaga pit, and Vivian VanCleve provided a sustainable garden project to beautify our campus.  This summer our youth joined with our children’s ministry program to jointly build bird and owl houses that were auctioned to benefit Habitat for Humanity.  Our youth are not just becoming the servant leaders of tomorrow, they are the servant leaders of today.
How thankful we are for the leadership that Rev Paul Maletic and Tatum Earp offer as our paid staff, in providing meaningful programming and connection to ensure these weekly activities happen.  In a day and age, where it is so difficult to be a student, navigating everything from social media anxieties to academic achievement pressures, an sacred space is being created at Flower Mound UMC in which students feel belonging as beloved children of God.  Our youth are sharing their gifts and talents as a blessing in our community and being brave in their discipleship of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.  We are so thankful for their witness that sets an example for us all.
So if you know a student, looking for a faith home, now is a great time to invite them to be a part of our Flower Mound UMC youth program – the BEST in Denton County!!!
