The Time It Takes To Steward Lives

The Time It Takes To Steward Lives

Reading: Mark 6:30-33

Have you ever had that someone whose life makes your world better?

The time you spend with them brings you calm in the midst of your storm and the presence of their grace offers you hope in chaos. There is a special person in my life, and in this church, who has done that for me. Whether or not you know her by face or name, she has made a difference in your life too.

This is because she is one of our church staff, who has worked behind the scenes for the past 5 years. Hired in September 2019, she has seen this church through a lot of ups and downs and many changes. From transitions to a staff of many to a staff of few, from paper print to digital campaign, from in person worship to online attendance, she has been constant. She has stayed sure and steady, while our building has flooded and she had to relocate our preschool, Sunday school classes, and after hours meeting with seamless precision. She has been the source of help that all would be fixed - from days where our roof was leaking and days when our outside sprinklers wouldn’t water plants. She has listened with empathy as funeral bulletins were printed and celebrated as altar flowers honored new births. She has been a presence of detail to ensure every AA group is welcomed with open doors and every Boy Scout meeting has air conditioning running. She is the first person who sits down with you in a morning cup of coffee to hear about your weekend, to the last person who leaves each night as she ensures every detail for the week is completed. Every day since September of 2019 I have thanked God for Shari Smith as a work colleague and a faithful friend. She has been my constant reminder in human form of God’s peace, provision and personal grace. And if you ask her, she would humbly say – I was just doing my job.

Shari’s last day in our church office is this Thursday, before she retires from FMUMC staff ministry, to care for her aging parents in McAllen, and enjoy the fruits of her many years of extra hours worked and countless ways she has given of her life and her heart. Fortunately, she will remain a member of our church so we can see her often. But, I hope you will join me in being inspired by who she is as a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ and that you too will join me in saying – well done, good and faithful servant, well done…

As we enter into our stewardship season, we reflect upon how we give of our time to the Lord. Shari is an excellent example of how we can share of our time: – in listening to others, in offering assurance of God’s peace, in being an example of grace and mercy, in offering our time to point to God’s work. Each of us have time to offer, and some of us do so freely,

while others do so with hesitation or even stinginess. But, I hope you hear from my witness today, that Shari is a wonderful example of how giving of ones time with graciousness, integrity and generosity builds the kingdom of God on earth.

More and more, people seem to pull back from giving time to the church. Whether less connection of giving their time to Bible study in learning together, or showing up less often in Sunday worship, or even being present less for volunteering in various activities, we see the priority of giving time less and less lately. But today, I hope you feel inspired, what a difference giving time makes. I, and others, notice the difference of wholehearted giving. The care-filled approach of intentionally making time in church ministry reveals Christ’s work in you.

Each of us have the same number of minutes in each day. How we use those make a difference. Let us manage our time, to point to who God is through our words and our actions. When we do this – we are a witness that Jesus takes the time to be with us all.
