The Irritating Word

The Irritating Word

Reading: Acts 16:16-34

“Alexandra, Christianity is not for your convenience.”

Those were my mother’s words to me when I was 16 years old and didn’t want to get out of bed to go to church. This phrase still nags at me, on the days when I am feeling lazy in my faith, or I don’t want to make the sacrificial choice, or do something for Jesus that will take me out of my comfort zone. These words can irritate me when I just want to Christianity to be easy.

In Acts 16, a female slave with a spirit of divination follows Paul and Silas around – crying out “These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” This woman follows them around for days and Paul is irritated by her words. So he releases her from this “spirit” possession. When she is released, her owners realize their money – making venture has disappeared with her “spirit,” so they have Paul and Silas flogged and imprisoned. To say the least, her owners are pretty irritated that she is freed, because it means they have lost money and power.

And it reminds us that the Word of God can be irritating for a lot of reasons – not just because of its nagging, but because of its impact. Sometimes the voice of God irritates us because it reminds us of what we need to be released from. Sometimes the impact of that freedom is irritating because it calls us to new action, that is inconvenient or uncomfortable.

I wish I could tell you the Word of God allows us to stay in bed, comfy and cozy in our convenience of what faith gives us. But that wouldn’t be the true gospel. The power of good news is found only when God’s Word irritates us enough to change us and the world. Maybe that means you get irritated enough to forgive the grudge that has bound you for decades, or to release yourself from the guilt of the past. But it also might mean your new found freedom leads you to sacrifices of comforts or conveniences that impact your monetary situation or the power structures around you. However the Word needs to work in your life – I pray that it is irritating.
