Teaching Each Other

Who taught you about God’s generosity?
Probably it was someone extravagant in their kindness, or overabundant in offering time, or bountiful in listening. There are so many ways we experience the generosity of God through our relationships.
One of the people who taught me God’s generosity was my youth Sunday school teacher. She was my Sunday teacher from the time I entered youth group through high school graduation. Every Sunday morning, the patience she showed us was astounding! She would listen to our joys and concerns every week, with care and attentiveness. She would teach with detail and relatability. She would follow up on what was going on in my life, and even after graduation, she maintained a connection with me. She even came to my first ordination interview to pray with me! The generosity that she gave me of time and connection made a huge impact on my life to understand what God’s love was all about through the church. She inspired me to be a more generous person by her example and witness.
As we have journeyed with Jacob in our generosity campaign, this week we hear how he introduces his whole family to Elohim. Jacob pours oil and wine upon the altar, expressing God’s generosity for them to begin to understand it. Jacob reminds us that without one another’s example of being generous, God’s generosity can not spread, and the fullness of God’s abundance is unknown to people who need that witness.
This Sunday, you will have a chance to witness to one another about God’s generosity in your midst. After a time of intentional prayer in worship, you will be asked to place your “estimate of giving card” in the offering baskets. This is not meant to show off who is putting cards in the plate. Rather, this is testifying about your faith in God’s generosity through your life. This is you saying – “I believe in a God that has been generous to me, and I want to witness to that for others.” Because even this small act of putting a card in a basket is enough to inspire someone else to start believing God is generous in their life as well.
So I hope you are taking the time this week to consider the many people in your life who have taught you about God’s generosity, so you might be that person for someone else.
