Renewal

Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:11-18

A new year begins today.

For many of you reading this, it means a fresh start and a new beginning. There are resolutions to make and calendars to be filled with events you are looking forward to experiencing.

For some of you reading this, the past year has brought so much change and grief, that the year ahead feels daunting in its direction, scope and worries of what this new life looks like.

These are the outer natures of our lives. The transitory and temporary situations that may are time-bound, but form our very existence. They are what we see, what we know and what we experience. Yet that newness does not always equate with renewal. When we expect the events of our calendars to bring joy, we can set ourselves up for disappointment. And when the grief of the uncontrollable forms our expectations of what is possible, we might miss everyday blessings.

As we enter this new year, let us allow ourselves to be renewed not by the outer being, but our inner nature. 2 Corinthians reminds us:

"So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal."

The next two Sundays, I pray you will join me in a 2 part sermon series, designed to engage us with intentionality of renewal. Connect with how the birth of Jesus forms our inner nature and outer being. As we explore practices of personal and social holiness, we find present joy and future hope. We experience inner transformation, and outward purpose. Let us enter 2025 with the full expectation of Christ's presence of renewal this year.
