Journey to Jerusalem

Journey to Jerusalem

by Rev. Alexandra Robinson on December 04, 2024

Reading Luke 1:1-24

If these walls could speak….

Mount Moriah, the location of Abraham’s preparation for Isaac’s sacrifice (Genesis 22)

The threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite purchased by King David (2 Samuel 24)

The first Temple built by Solomon holding the ark of the covenant in the Holy of Holies (1 Kings 6)

The destruction of the Temple by the Babylonians in 387 BC (2 Kings 25)

The second Temple built by Zerabbabel in 515 BC (Ezra 3:12-13)

The Temple rebuilt by King Herod as the largest sacred site in the Roman Empire (Matthew 24)

The destruction of the Temple in 67 AD

The vision of the prophet Mohammed’s transportation in 621AD to the Foundation stone.

The wailing wall

The Dome of the Rock

What would we hear from these walls in Jerusalem? Like Zachariah the priest, many have come to these walls praying – for hope, for help, for healing. In the millinia span of voices praying to God through wars and rumors of wars within the walls of this sacred space, I believe God’s still small voice whispers – shalom.

Shalom in Hebrew is peace – God’s peace that is not just a feeling of calm in our inner soul, but a a life led in peaceful harmony with all of creation. This is God’s ultimate will for all of humanity. Shalom’ symbolizes a state of harmony, where relationships are free from discord and strife. It signifies individual and communal wholeness, leading our continual work towards peace and justice within societies.

This week, as we continue the journey to Bethlehem, we pause in Jerusalem to listen to Zachariah’s protest of God’s promised child to he and his wife Elizabeth. A priest serving in the Temple, he is unable to speak during the time of waiting expectantly for the child called John the Baptist. Perhaps we too, might take the time to listen, instead of speak.

And in that space, hear the whisper of God’s renewal of all creation – shalom leading us into a deeper understanding of the Prince of Peace.
