Inspiring Generosity

Genesis 25:19-24

When we reflect upon the concept of generosity – there are synonyms that likely come to our secular mind: plentiful, abundant, extravagant, lavish. But there is a new word I would like you to consider this month in relation to generosity: Inspiring.

Why? Because as the stories of Issac, Jacob and Esau will remind us, our human nature misunderstands God’s generosity. Just as in this passage – Jacob tries to take the blessing of an inheritance from Esau out of sibling rivalry and competition, so we also try to take God’s concept of generosity and make it into our own concept of generosity.

I know I struggle with this regularly. As I compare myself to others, I wonder why God hasn’t “blessed” me with the things I see others have: lavish vacations or an extravagant home or extended family roots or an intellectual mind. And in comparing myself to others who may have these things, I miss seeing the ways God is at work in my life so generously. I get stuck in a secular understanding of blessings that are about financial security or outward appearances or individual experiences. When I am so focused on what I want God’s generosity to be in my life, I miss experiencing the joy of what God’s generosity IS currently in my life. And if I take a moment to reflect on God’s generosity now, then life changes dramatically. I feel blessed TODAY, I experience joy NOW, and I know peace in THAT MOMENT. I can feel the blessing of a time taken in respite and renewal of a walk in my neighborhood today. I can experience the joy of laughter with the relationships I do have now. I know peace when I take a deep breath in that moment to connect with God’s spirit.

And when I do this – an amazing thing happens – God’s generosity grows and grows and becomes more and more abundant. Because the more I look for God’s generosity, the more I will see it. The more I give thanks for it, the more it will be revealed. The more I express it, the more I become aware of it. God’s generosity inspires me to live in a more generous mindset.

This mindset is vital, particularly for this day and age. For there is so much of a scarcity mentality of what the world is not, the sadness of what it is, and I see so many people discouraged. And so, this month, I would like us to take a journey together with these Biblical characters to discover more about how God is generous with us in a way that inspires us to live in a mindset that is generous to God, ourselves and others. I hope you will join me, as together we are inspired by our generous God.
