Imagine Advent

Imagine Advent

by Rev. Alexandra Robinson on December 03, 2025

Reading: Isaiah 2:15, 11:1-5, 35:1-4

Imagination. We might define imagination as the stuff of kids coloring pages and daydreams out the window. We may think that we are too old or too organized engage in a creative frivolity. We might consider that imagination doesn’t get things done, and rather keeps us distracted in a season where to do lists rule.

But this season of Advent, that is exactly what I am inviting you into – Imagine. Your imagination is a gift that I believe God has given to you, particularly for this time of year. For in preparing our hearts for Christ, we are not engaging in the expected. Jesus’ birth is not business as usual, or a predictable list accomplished. Jesus birth is a radical, upside down, inside out transformation of the world. What we know of the world and of each other is expected to transform. And it is an existence that can only be imagined into reality.

Imagine a world where there are we will not learn war anymore.

Imagine a land where the wolf lies down with the lamb without fear.

Imagine a day where the desert will rejoice and blossom.

Imagine a way where equity is given to the oppressed.

Imagine when those who have a fearful heart, do not fear.

This is the imagination of the prophet Isaiah that we are hearing all through Advent, as we light our candles each week to imagine the hope, peace, love and joy of Christ. And only as we speak it into an existence – something so radical and seemingly impossible, can we begin to trust that God can do it. For this is the vision of what has been given to us in the birth of Emmanuel – God with us, and to which we are committing our whole lives.

So this Advent, will you imagine with me – an existence that only God can provide? For that world is worth more than a daydream – but a life wholly committed to every day.

Pastor Alex

Start Imagining Advent this Sunday from 5-7 p.m. We will have a potluck dinner, sing songs, and engage in creative activities of music, storytelling, poetry, art and Chrismons as we imagine a world filled with Chris’s hope, love, peace and joy.
