Creation’s Pains

Romans 8:12-38

The whole creation has been groaning…

…and we feel it. The news reports remind us of the devastating rain producing floods, destroying lives and homes. Creation groans overloaded and overburdened with pain as it tries to hold what it cannot. We groan in pain with it, in our grief and lament of what has been and what will not be. The Spirit bears witness to our pain, with sighs too deep for words. And yes… it feels too deep for words.

So Paul reminds us that we feel this pain because we are joint heirs with Christ. This is our assurance that we do not suffer alone. Christ suffers for and with us. We are joint heirs of the suffering of Christ. Faith is not warm and fuzzy, with platitudes glossing over pain or praises negating suffering. Our truth is that we cannot avoid suffering in our faith, because Christ does not avoid suffering. Christ enters suffering in solidarity with loving humanity. So do we.

When the pain of this world feels overwhelming, know it is because you are joint heirs with Christ – with his suffering, and also with His glory. (Romans 8:17). We inherit what Jesus gave us – to care for those who weep, hunger, thirst and need. And with Christ, we work and wait. We work, offering compassion and healing for the times and spaces to which we are invited. While we work, we wait. We wait for the redemption of all the world, seeing Christ’s glory in glimpses to give us hope of its fullness. For we inherit Christ’s glory as well. So let yourself groan in these pains, remembering they are labor pains for God’s glory. Lament with sighs that only the Spirit can give word to name. And as you actively work for the birth of redemption God wants for the whole world, may you have real hope in the glory of God.

If you are interested in “passing it on” through the blessing of your witness to God’s love, please join in our efforts with the Horizon’s Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church listed here:

Give Financially

The most effective way to help at this moment is through financial contributions. Our Bishop is calling for a special, conference-wide offering to directly support relief and recovery efforts in the communities impacted by the floods, which span the Rio and Horizon Texas Conferences. Every gift, no matter the size, becomes a lifeline of hope.

Volunteer Your Time and Skills

If you feel called to serve, please let us know by completing the volunteer interest form linked here. Our Horizons Texas Conference coordinator, Rev. Basset will work to match volunteers with emerging needs, ensuring that your gifts meet real, immediate challenges.

Prepare for Future Needs

At present, there are enough flood buckets available in Central Texas. However, we anticipate a need to replenish supplies as recovery continues. Learn more about flood buckets here, and watch for future conference updates with details on when and where to deliver flood buckets.
