Ups and Downs

Famine – it’s a real thing in Genesis, and in our world today.
As we know so many people are struggling to make ends meet even in our surrounding community, I am grateful for how our missions ministry stewards their resources to be faithful to the call of filling the emptiness. This past Sunday morning, our church fed breakfast to 50 people who are homeless in Denton. On Sunday at noon, our church packed 150 Lovepacs boxes to provide meals for students over Thanksgiving. In the coming weeks, we will provide more Lovepac boxes for students over the Christmas holidays. And the need is growing. We have been told that the Lovepacs serving the city of Denton has closed due to funding, and so the need remains to be met.
But just as Jospeh had to manage the resources he had well, so we too steward our resources faithfully. Lovepacs ministry doesn’t just happen, it requires an incredible amount of planning and preparing before our packing sessions. The stewardship of time and resources means that members of our church travel from store to store, trying to find the cheapest prices on the items needed. Church members literally store these items in bulk in their homes, since our church storage capacity is not sufficient to manage the supply. Our preschool provides food drives to offset costs and the “packing and shipping” is a carefully managed process to ensure that when we gather to pack the food, it is organized and efficient. This past week, one of our children even raised money by creating popsicle stick creations and selling them, so he could buy food for the Lovepacs ministry.
I share all this with you, to remind you that that our missions ministry is all encompassing of our church. It is not just one department, it is our whole church coming together to support an essential witness of our faith: we are a church who is committed to feeding fully in body, mind and spirit. This ministry is essential to who we are and what we do, so we can be faithful to what we have been given to steward. It requires our faithful response to meet a growing need. As you continue to be in prayer for our church as we explore new ways we can meet this need, may we take a lesson from Joseph to steward our resources well.
I share all of this to thank you for your faithfulness, even in the personal sacrifice it requires. And as you gather around the table this Thanksgiving, may you know deep gratitude for the gifts you have been given to steward faithfully.
