A Powerful Parade

A Powerful Parade

by Rev. Alexandra Robinson on April 09, 2025

Reading: Luke 23:29-38

“The Lord needs it.”

There is power in these words – power enough to take a donkey away from its rightful owner with no questions asked. “The Lord needs it” – the disciples told the owner of the donkey. Can you imagine? Going up to someone’s parked car, hotwiring it, and when asked what you are doing with it, saying – “the Lord needs it.” We often don’t imagine what the donkey owner’s reaction would be: frustration, inconvenience or discomfort perhaps initially. But I imagine hearing the Lord’s name used then made him feel honored, privileged and willing to give.

That is why these words are so powerful, because it places humanity in a position of honoring God. We give of what we have for a purpose above ourselves. This is also why the words “The Lord needs it” must be used carefully. We cannot assume that what the Lord needs is aligned with our own wants. The Lord’s needs regularly require us to sacrifice for God’s glory, not our own.

I do believe that the Lord needs us: the Lord needs us to go out into the world and invite others to participate in the good news of Jesus. And I believe that Palm Sunday offers us opportunity to gather others with us in the parade, to feel the strength of Jesus’ power, not our own. As much as Jesus rode on a donkey like other kings would, his statement was one against power as defined by the world. Jesus’ parade mirrored another parade on the other side of Jerusalem: one filled with soldiers, chariots and all kinds of pomp and circumstance as Pilate entered during Passover to enforce political peace. But Jesus disciples gathered with only the cloaks off their backs: following Jesus because his teachings had transformed their life so much that the very stones would have cried out had they tried to be silenced. The contrast allows us to see that Pilates parade was power meant to oppress, while Jesus’ parade was a power of new life. The Lord needed the disciple’s presence to share that truth. Because a parade without any people, isn’t much of a parade.

I believe the Lord needs your presence today too, even when it requires sacrificing our own needs of comfort or convenience. So, I hope that you will invite a friend, neighbor or colleague to experience Holy week and Easter at church, even if it feels temporarily uncomfortable or inconvenient to offer that invitation. The Lord needs it: because the world desperately needs to hear about Jesus Christ as Lord offering new life.

So this Palm Sunday, let us ask ourselves – are we willing to let Jesus hotwire our car?
