40 Days Begins Today

40 Days Begins Today

by Rev. Alexandra Robinson on February 18, 2026

Reading: Matthew 4:1-11

Today is Ash Wednesday, the 40 days of repentance, fasting and humility. This season of the church year, reminds us that the number 40 is symbolic of our human need for God in the rhythms of repentance and renewal repeating in our lives. There were 40 days and nights of rain with Noah’s ark, leading from repentance to new creation. There were 40 years of wandering in the wilderness where the Israelites learned how to live in the commandments of God and community with each other. There were 40 days of Jesus’ fasting in the wilderness being tempted by the devil that inaugurated his public ministry. The number 40 is used over 150 times in the Bible to express how spiritual transformation is part of our relationship with God. We have never fully arrived in our relationship with God, for there is always need for deeper trust and dependency in the holy image in which we are created. Though our very beginnings are dependent upon God’s creative work with dust of the earth and divine breath, we quickly tried to be independent of God, eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Recognizing the lifelong tug and pull of dependence and independence with God is the purpose of Lent.

In 40 days of repentance: introspection of actions we must ask forgiveness from, and the challenging work of reconciling damage in those relationships, we will learn that we are not independent from the harm that is caused from harsh words spoken or neglect of care. Repentance leads us to see we are dependent upon one another to experience God’s presence in relationship.

In 40 days of fasting: giving up habits or experiences that are unhealthy, we will learn that the creature comforts we turn to in times of feeling frail, block us from relying upon God fully. When the fullness we find in distractions and comfort foods is not available, we are forced to look deeply at that emptiness and rely on God for comfort.

In the 40 days of humility: putting others before ourselves in practices of serving and almsgiving, God’s presence is revealed in the most unlikely of places and experiences. This recognition that we can learn about God from anyone at any point, humbles us before the magnificence of God’s amazing work. We become more dependent upon God’s action for assurance than our own actions of success.

40 days of repentance, fasting and humility is our journey together this Lent. May we be assured that our dependence upon God throughout will be met with renewed life.
