Our children’s ministry is vibrant, active and thriving. For many families, it is also their first doorway into the life of the church. We are looking for someone who loves children, understands how they learn and grow in faith, and can create an environment where children know they are loved, valued and an important part of the church.

What You’ll Lead

At the heart of this position is Christian education and faith formation for children Pre-K through 5th grade.

The Children’s Minister will:

  • Develop and lead a thoughtful, age-appropriate children’s ministry and religious education program grounded in Scripture and the United Methodist tradition.
  • Select, develop and implement curriculum for Sunday School, Children’s Church and other faith formation opportunities.
  • Help children understand the Bible, worship, prayer, service and what it means to participate in a Christian community.
  • Create engaging opportunities for children to learn through conversation, activities, music, art, service and play.
  • Develop programming that helps older elementary children prepare for the transition into youth ministry.
  • Provide parents and caregivers with practical resources for continuing faith formation at home.

Build Community With Children and Families

Children’s ministry at FMUMC is about more than programming. It is about relationships.

The Children’s Minister will:

  • Build meaningful relationships with children and their families.
  • Welcome and follow up with new families and help them find a place within the larger church community.
  • Stay connected with existing families and notice when someone has been away or may need additional support.
  • Help children understand that they are not simply attending church — they are a valued part of it.
  • Partner with parents and caregivers as they navigate questions about faith, childhood and family life.
  • Work closely with Nursery, Youth, Music, Worship, Missions, Outreach and other ministries to create a connected experience for families.

Lead and Equip Volunteers

A healthy children’s ministry depends on adults who are prepared, supported and excited to serve.

The Children’s Minister will:

  • Recruit, train, schedule and support Sunday School teachers and other children’s ministry volunteers.
  • Equip volunteers with curriculum, resources and clear expectations.
  • Ensure all programming follows the church’s child safety practices and policies.
  • Build a strong volunteer culture where people understand both what they are being asked to do and why the work matters.
  • Develop and empower lay leaders who can take meaningful ownership within the ministry.

Bring Children Into the Life of the Church

The Children’s Minister will help make children visible and active participants in worship and the wider congregation through opportunities such as:

  • Children’s messages during worship
  • Acolyte ministry
  • Bible Presentation Sunday
  • Children’s Sabbath
  • Baptism celebrations
  • Blessing of the Backpacks
  • Advent and Christmas programming
  • Vacation Bible School
  • Children’s music programs
  • Mission and service opportunities
  • Seasonal community events and festivals

The Children’s Minister will work with worship and pastoral staff to create experiences that are meaningful for children while connecting them to the broader worshiping community.

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and ministry planning.
  • Collaborate closely with pastoral staff and other ministry leaders.
  • Coordinate children’s ministry communications with the church communications team.
  • Participate in appropriate Faith Formation, Outreach and church leadership meetings.

What We’re Looking For

  • A collaborative approach to working with pastors, staff members, volunteers and parents.
  • Alignment with the mission and ministry of Flower Mound United Methodist Church and a desire to help children grow within the Christian faith.

Seminary education is not required, but theological knowledge in the United Methodist tradition is important.
